Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders including M. Venkaiah Naidu, Prakash Javdekar and Bandaru Dattatreya and hundreds of party workers were arrested by the police here on Sunday, when they tried to march towards Raj Bhavan as part of their agitation against price rise.

The party mobilised a large number of workers and activists in front of Institution of Engineers in Khairatabad for the protest programme. The activists raised slogans against the Central and State governments and exhibited placards on price rise.

Speaking at the protest meet, party leaders alleged that UPA government at the Centre had failed completely in controlling prices of essential commodities. Officials and ruling party leaders have colluded with traders and the unholy nexus was leading to hoarding and black-marketing of commodities, they alleged.

The Centre was escaping responsibility on the issue by throwing the onus on State governments, though all fiscal and revenue-related policies were in its hands.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had misled the nation by making States responsible for the problem. At a time when the prices of food grains were coming down worldwide, they were on the rise in India, the BJP leaders pointed out.

They also questioned the ruling party why it had not reduced petrol prices proportionately when the crude oil prices dipped below 50 dollars a barrel last year. Their party was also planning a “Chalo Parliament” protest on price rise soon, the BJP leaders noted.

After the speeches, the party workers led by leaders were bundled into waiting vans by the police. Party leaders G. Kishan Reddy, N. Indrasena Reddy, K. Laxman, Baddam Bal Reddy, Ch. Ramachandra Reddy and others participated.
